Abstract
In this chapter, a brief discussion is given of gauge or scale invariance as it relates to gravitational theories with an added scalar field. (Scale invariance in a wider context is also discussed in Chapter 9.) The following three paragraphs comment in this respect on scalar modifications of general relativity, the Brans/Dicke theory, and scalar-tensor theories of wider scope that were inspired by the Brans/Dicke theory.
