Conference paper

Summary

This paper discusses the impact of technology on energy usage efficiency in the industrial, residential and commercial sectors as well as an agenda for future technological progress. The potential for energy conservation in industry is discussed in terms of available technologies as well as theoretical limits computed by means of the concept of available useful work. Data is also presented on energy efficiencies of industrial products within the OECD countries. A variety of options are also discussed on energy conservation technologies in the buildings sector with particular reference to window materials and heat pumps. Integrated Community Energy Systems, which is an optimal combination of integrated technological systems, community designs and implementation mechanisms is discussed. A number of suggestions are made regarding the opportunities for enhancing energy efficiencies through R&D and technological innovations.
