Abstract
This review deals with the impact that astronomical observations from outer space will have on the fields of nebular and extragalactic research. The discussion will be confined to the classical optical region of the electromagnetic spectrum extended to the adiacent UV and IR. In this spectral range the atmosphere of the Earth seriously hampers the capabilities of ground-based telescopes. First, the atmospheric absorption restricts the available spectrum to a narrow window sharply bounded on its ultraviolet side. Second, the low angular resolution caused by atmospheric turbolence, scintillation and differential refraction (seeing) degrades the images of celestial bodies spoiling them of their finest structural details. Third, the sky brightness, magnified by the contribution of the airglow and scattered light, combines with seeing to set in an operative threshold to the faintness of the sources observable from the ground.
