Abstract
Hypertension is the greatest risk factor for stroke, which is the primary cause of death for the Japanese people. Even though there is not much difference between the prevalence of hypertension in Japan and that in western countries, the incidence of stroke is higher in Japan whereas that of myocardial infarction is higher in the western countries. It might be logical to assume that hypertension in Japan tends to be causally related to stroke, but that hypertension in the western countries is apt to be associated with myocardial infarction. A clarification of this feature will make it possible to cast light on a qualitative difference between Japan and the western countries with respect to hypertension.
