Abstract
The hormonal dependence of the prostate glands of many species has been extensively studied since the prostate is an integral component of the male reproductive system and because there is a high incidence of pathological processes involving the gland in older men. While a great deal has been learned about the effects and actions of androgens in both prostatic carcinoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), detailed studies of the biochemistry of these processes have been hampered by the lack of suitable animal model systems. The two most common animal models used have been the prostates of the dog and rat. In addition several prostatic tumour lines, derived from both rat and dog have been studied recently. However all these systems are morphologically and histologically distinct from the human gland and great care must be taken in extending the findings from these systems to humans.
