Abstract
It is notable that remarkable progress in the technology of intrauterine contraception has taken place in the last fifteen years. Research activities in this direction were stimulated by reports that linked the administration of contraceptive steroids with a higher incidence of systemic complications in women users. It was estimated in 1974 that more than fifteen million women around the world were using the IUD (Speidel and Ravenholt 1974). This number is on the increase every year, paralleled with further achievements in studies performed to minimize the complications and side effects of appliances used for intrauterine contraception.
