Abstract

The surface epithelium of the endometrium is smooth with no mucosal folds. It is composed of columnar ciliated and nonciliated cells. Endometrial gland openings, apparent within the surface, have different shapes and distribution throughout the menstrual cycle. The surface epithelium of the normal endometrium undergoes cyclical alterations in cell shape, apical microvilli, ciliation and secretory activity (Daniel et al. 1973, 1975; Ferenczy and Richart 1973; Johannisson and Nilsson 1972; Morgenroth and Verhagen 1972; Nilsson and Nygren 1972).
