Abstract

The penis and scrotum develop well toward the end of the third trimester and are dependent on hormonal factors, separate from urinary tract development. This hormonal stimulus involves high local androgen production by the fetal testes with conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone by five alpha reductase in the genital skin. This specific biochemical step is critical in genital differentiation and any combination of factors affecting this series of events probably accounts for many of the genital anomalies in males (Raifer and Walsh 1978).
