Abstract

Vasectomy, or more exactly, vas sectioning and occlusion, has become a popular elective procedure for permanent male contraception in the United States, Asia, and parts of Europe. Though cultural barriers to its acceptance currently exist in other parts of the world, vasectomy has been introduced into Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. In spite of dire predictions that men will not accept the procedure for fear of lost masculinity or castration, reports indicate that when properly presented, men in all societies will welcome the procedure when their concern for limitation of family size and economic and educational advancement outweigh desire for more children; and where concern for risks of maternal morbidity and female contraceptive method failure are overriding considerations.
