Abstract

Using data from 1960 to 1976, the author examines population changes, especially at the school-age level. He then shows how the enrolment increase — 77% for the period — is distributed at successive levels of education and between developed and developing countries. The comparison of enrolments with total populations produces a series of enrolment ratios. Despite the considerable progress recorded by developing countries, the date show that drop-out rates remain high.
