Abstract
The gallbladder is frequently visualized during the routine study of the upper abdomen, but it is more consistently detected if the patient has been fasting for at least 12 hours prior to the examination. In addition, the patient should take a fat-free meal on the evening prior to the examination. If maximal distention of the gallbladder is to be achieved, it is important that the patient receive nothing by mouth after the evening meal and that the ultrasound examination of the gallbladder be performed as early in the morning as possible. An early examination will minimize the effects of bowel gas due to air swallowed by an anxious patient. In some emergency situations, however, an examination may be performed at any time, since fasting will not alter the size of the gallbladder if obstruction is not present. It can be especially helpful in cases of suspected acute cholecystitis.
