Abstract
For a number of reasons, the ultrasound examination of the pelvis preceded the evaluation of higher abdominal structures by several years. The pelvic structures are few in number and are generally symmetrical in both men and women. Furthermore, a distended urinary bladder can serve to displace interfering bowel gas out of the pelvis, resulting in a window through which to evaluate the key pelvic structures. Gray scale technology has added a new dimension by improving resolution and allowing for observation of rather minor changes in the internal structures of these various organs. This chapter will discuss the gray scale anatomy of the pelvic bowl as well as the multiplicity of abnormalities that are encountered. Obstetrical aspects of the pelvis will be dealt with in chapter 12.
