Abstract
The application of the method of hypothesis to virtue opens with the following passage:
And so, too, with virtue. Since we do not know either what it is [hoti estin] or what sort of thing it is [hopoion ti], we shall posit an hypothesis, and consider whether or not it can be taught by asking: ‘If virtue is an attribute of the soul, is it teachable or not?’ (87b2–5)
