Summary

This chapter is concerned with (a) the dynamic mechanical behaviour and (b) the fracture toughness of crosslinked unsaturated polyester resins.

Four dynamic mechanical relaxations are normally seen. The reasons for assigning these relaxations to particular motions of the network structure are given, although there is still some uncertainty about the origin of the β-transition.

The fracture behaviour of crosslinked polyesters is also considered. The fracture surfaces are similar to those of glass in many respects. Fracture toughness is low, and only slightly improved by the addition of a dispersed elastomeric phase.
