Summary
Vinyl ester resins are relatively recent additions to the thermosetting family. They have some features in common with unsaturated polyesters, and most have structural features similar to those of epoxides. They are notable for their high-temperature properties, their chemical resistance, their high elongation and their convenient processing characteristics.
This chapter describes the history, the synthesis and typical structures of vinyl esters, and relates these structures to the properties of cast resins and laminates.
Applications in corrosion-resistant equipment, land transport, electrical insulation, marine, and several other fields are described. The toxicological properties of vinyl ester resins are summarised.
