Abstract
One of salient features of all in vitro mutagenicity testing is the inclusion of a post-mitochondrial liver fraction to provide a metabolising system which aims at mimicking the metabolism of test compounds in vivo. The enzymic spectrum of such preparations varies considerably depending on the species from which it is derived, whether the animal has been pre-treated with chemicals which induce liver mixed-function oxidase systems, and on the care with which homogenates are prepared. Thus, quality control of such preparations is essential.
