Abstract
In 1869, Horner described a syndrome consisting of ptosis, miosis and decreased ocular pressure after injury to the cervical sympathetic trunk. This led Abadie (1897) to suggest treating glaucoma patients by resection of the superior cervical ganglion. Jonnescó, in 1889, was the first to perform this operation. For some time thereafter, this operation was the accepted treatment for glaucoma, but the results were disappointing because the decrease in IOP was only of short duration and the effect was variable (Elschnig, 1912; Linksz, 1931).
