Abstract

The word “herpes” (to creep) has been used in medicine since ancient times to describe a variety of skin conditions until the ninteenth century. The material excreted from the lesions was thaught to be bile mixed with other humors (Wildy, 1973). Since the fourth decade of this century, rapid developments in the understanding of viral diseases have considerably changed the concept of herpesvirus infections.
