Abstract

There are several saline lakes located in the barren and ice-free area of the Prince Olav Coast in Antarctica, and their biology and chemistry provide fascinating subjects for limnologists studying extreme environments. The major chemistry of the lakes has been studied by several authors, mainly in order to compare it with lakes in the Dry Valley and elucidate geochemical evolution (Torii & Yamagata 1973; Torii et al 1977; Murayama 1977; Hirabayashi & Ossaka 1977). Heavy metals in one lake have been studied by Sano et al (1977). Less is known of biological features. Taxonomic studies of the algae of some lakes were made by Akiyama & Ohno (1975) and Watanuki (1979) using culture techniques, but there is little information on the microorganisms and their relation to chemical parameters.
