Abstract

Our experiences in ophthalmic ultrasonography and those of other laboratories have shown that it is extremely difficult to correlate ocular histopathology with ultrasonographic images by visual inspection, despite the use of gray scale, video inversion, color and isometric displays. Julesz (1975) has provided the experimental confirmation of the eye’s inability to analyze images of this order of statistical complexity. He has shown that the eye has no difficulty in detecting differences amongst images whose first or second order statistics differ, but has extreme difficulty in arriving at such differentiation when the third or higher order of statistics differ. Thus, in Fig. 1 if one deals with a simple image in which the elements are of equal size and gray scale value, one can readily perceive changes in texture if the spatial distribution amongst the points is altered.
