Abstract

Up till now echografic signals have been mainly used for visual evaluation by a clinician. For this purpose the signal is rectified, filtered, and often compressed, rendering a one sided peak pattern, known as the video-signal. In this processing the received signal is irreversibly distorted, causing a loss of information. It is this information that may yield valuable parameters of the acoustic properties of the considered tissue. Though some results have been reported on tissue characterization by analysis of A-scan video signals (Mountford & Wells 1972, Thijssen, et al. 1980), the undistorted RF-signal is much more appropriate for quantitative analysis.
