Abstract

After examining the eye with the Kretztechnik 7200 MA apparatus and after quantitative membrane differentiation (Ossoinig 1972) we use the Bronson-Turner unit for supplementary information (especially topographic) (Bronson et al. 1976). Special attention is then paid to the relation between membrane structures and the ora serrata and the optic disc, to the optic disc itself (cupping, edema, drusen), to signs of proliferative disease, to signs of traction of vitreous structures on the retina and to structures in the subretinal space in case of a retinal detachment. Sometimes we found it possible to detect retinal tears with this unit. When a discontinuity in a membrane structure quantitatively qualified as being retina, is seen, there are three possibilities:

  1. (1)

it results from an acoustic artefact caused by retinal folding,

  2. (2)

it results from an acoustic artefact by shadowing of a structure anterior to the retina, or

  3. (3)

it is a real retinal tear.
