Abstract
Massive periretinal proliferation (MPP) is one of the serious complications of retinal detachment. Total retinal detachment with advanced MPP has so far been regarded as inoperable. However, the number of successful operations is increasing due to development of vitreous surgery. In the case of advanced MPP, there are many cases in which detailed findings on the fundus cannot be obtained because of complicated cataract and vitreous opacity. Ultrasonic diagnosis is the most useful method for examination of such cases, and it not only enables diagnosis of complications of retinal detachment but also progressive stages of MPP. The author examined 20 eyes with advanced MPP by means of A- and B-scan, in order to establish ultrasonic characteristics of MPP.
