Abstract

The medullo-epithelioma whether ‘congenital’ or ‘acquired’ is an extremely rare tumor. The history of the ‘Primary tumors of the non pigmented ciliary epithelium’ dates from the beginning of this century and many reports in the past have given their contribution to the understanding of the nature and the exact histogenesis of this kind of neoplasms. Many names were attributed to them: ‘Teratoneuroma’ (Verhoeff 1904); ‘Diktyoma’ (Fuchs 1908) and ‘Medullo-epithelioma’ (Grinker 1931), because of the difficulties in classifying them (Vogel 1974, Reese 1976). In the last years Zimmerman (1971), in the fourth Verhoeff Lecture, after having discussed extensively history, terminology and genesis of these tumors suggested a classification, based on their embryonic nature now widely accepted (Broughton & Zimmerman 1978). According to this classification our two cases dealing with a baby and one adult, should be properly classified as medullo-epithelioma the child’s one, and as a carcinoma (malignant ephithelioma) the second one.
