Abstract

Echography has developed into an important examination technique for the ophthalmic surgeon, particularly in patients with vitreous abnormalities. A-scan techniques are very important for biometry in the implantation of intraocular lenses and for tissue differentiation, whereas B-scan techniques are quite helpful in outlining pathological structures in, around and behind the globe. Especially since the development of vitreous surgery by Machemer and associates (1971) examination techniques of the vitreous have become increasingly important. Combination of A- and B-scan techniques is necessary to get maximal and optimal information about the morphology in the eye. Additional electro-ophthalmological testing methods have shown to be equally important to give information about the functional state of the eye.
