Abstract

For over a hundred years, the control of colouration in P. brassicae larvae and pupae has baffled scientists and such workers as Wood (1867), Meldola (1873), Poulton (1887a,b, 1890, 1982), Merrifield & Poulton (1899), Dürken (1916), Brecher (1917), Cretschmar (1920), Bertolini (1924, 1927), Gardiner (1965), Wigglesworth (1970), Bückmann (1971), Angersbach (1970, 1975, et al. 1971), Rothschild et al. (1975a,b), Kayser-Wegmann (1975) and Kayser & Angersbach (1974, 1975) have sought to elucidate the factors involved.
