This account of the fish populations of Scotland’s largest lochs is based on unpublished data available from netting, echo sounding, counting at fish passes and angling. Some of the records are very recent (e.g. from gill netting in Loch Lomond 1978–79) others extend back over 100 years (seine netting in Loch Awe). The data provide a basic background to the fish and fisheries of these large lochs and comparisons among them. It is very clear that Loch Lomond has the most diverse fish community with 15 species, and Lochs Morar and Shiel the least with only five species. The fisheries of Lochs Lomond, Awe and Ness are also much larger and more varied than those of Lochs Morar and Shiel. The reasons for these differences are discussed in relation to natural differences among the five large lochs and to changes due to human pressures.
