Interactions of Food and Climate: Issues and Policy Considerations

  • Chapter
Food-Climate Interactions

Abstract

One principal way in which climatic changes affect human affairs is by their impact on food production. But the production, distribution, storage and consumption of food depends on many interconnected factors, of which climate is but one. These include land, labor, capital, energy, level of technology, “know-how”, population size, social organization, economic power, and (not least) climate. This paper concentrates on the interactions between food and climate, recognizing, however, that such interactions have restricted meaning outside of the overall context of food production, distribution, and consumption issues. Thus, anyone contemplating policy matters on food-climate issues will need to consider many of these interconnected factors.

This is the executive summary of a longer report of the same title prepared for the workshop by the authors. Copies of the full report can be obtained from the Federal Environmental Agency, Berlin.
