Approximate Dating Of Tephra

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 75))

Abstract

Tephra studies would benefit greatly from the development of simple, inexpensive, approximate-dating methods that would allow us to estimate the age of a tephra sample in the field office. Colleagues outside the discipline, whose main interest in tephra layers lie in the dates they represent, would benefit also. Two methods that look promising are tephra-hydration dating, and etching of heavy mineral phenocrysts. Basic research into the weathering of tephra will be needed before either method can be used with confidence, but the potential is there. The paper discusses these methods, the problems associated with them, the uses to which they have been put, and the data that have been collected.
