Abstract

Optical, trace element, and rare earth element data on the pumice-rich layer of volcanic ash discovered near the bottom of the Upper Paleolithic stratigraphic sequence of cultural deposits inside Franchthi Cave at Koilada, on the SW coast of the Argolid Peninsula, have confirmed its correlation with the Y-5 ash layer in the Mediterranean deep-sea cores (Farrand, 1971) (1). Similar data obtained on a sample of Gray Campanian ash from Tufara, near Naples, Italy, confirms the identification of the Y-5 ash and the Gray Campanian ash as suggested by Thunell et al., (1979) (2).
