Abstract

Separation of propagation and source effects in observed seismic signals is a central problem in any attempt to identify seismic sources. Surface-waves play a major role in tele-seismic signals at periods greater than 10–20 sec. They have been investigated in great details for numerous tectonic regions and different types of seismic sources. As propagation parameters (dispersion, attenuation) are sensitive to regional structures crossed by the waves, they can be used to infer regional models of the Earth. Such models can, in turn, be used 1) to predict the actual dispersion and attenuation of surface waves in a given region and 2) to compute the model-dependent terms in the source-excitation problem.
