Abstract

The climate is now recognized as being continually variable and can change in several ways (as clearly and fully shown in parts 1 and 2 of this volume). The most obvious is through a secular trend which produces a change in the average, but another very important factor is the variability of climate, in which the mean may remain the same, the oscillations about that mean becoming larger or smaller.
