Abstract

The history of European climate over the last 1000 years may be subdivided in 6 periods, showing as extremes the Medieval warm period from 1150 to 1300 with mild wet winters and very warm dry summers, and the so-called Little Ice Age from 1550 to 1700 with very cold dry winters and cool wet summers. The areal extent and detailed characteristics, even of these extreme periods, are only poorly known. It is well established that North Sea floods became more abundant during the Medieval warm period, while these where very rare during and at the end of the Little Ice Age. As to their frequency of occurrence as well as their intensity during the intermediate centuries, the situation is still somewhat confused.
