Abstract

Chemical reactivity is usually defined in terms of reaction rate constants. In these lectures, we shall describe the basic concepts of ultrafast kinetics and present the experimental means for monitoring the rates of picosecond chemical reactions. The major portion of these lectures will consist of the elucidation of chemical and biological reactions. In particular we shall discuss the relaxation mechanism of azulene in condensed media, the primary electron donor processes in chlorophyll, and proton translocation in chemical and biological systems.
