Abstract
I consider it a great honor and a privilege to have been selected by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division to organize and direct the first NATO Advanced Study Institute on Fast Reactions in Energetic Systems. I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Raymond F. Walker, Chief of Energetic Materials Division, LCWSL, ARRADCOM, for his inspiring perception and invaluable guidance in organizing this meeting. I feel particularly honored by the presence of Dr. George Gamota, Director for Research, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense, Washington, DC, and I would like to thank him for his enthusiastic support of the NATO Institute. We have been very fortunate to attract such a distinguished group of scientists from 15 different countries, and on behalf of the organizing committee and myself, I wish to extend a very sincere welcome to all of you.
