Abstract
This chapter begins with a review of housing accommodations as a bundle of attributes (Section 2), and proceeds to a discussion of arguments from basic rights and welfare considerations that have been used to try to improve the North American housing delivery system (3). Household numbers and sizes are presented in the next section (4), with an examination of crowding, plumbing deficiencies and homeownership. Section 5 contains statistics on personal expenditures on and satisfaction obtained from housing. In Section 6 I consider new housing units, with special reference to single family detached dwellings and the achievements of estimated national requirements. That is followed by a review of numbers of and dollar losses from building fires (7). In the final section (8) I summarize the chapter and combine its results with all previous chapters.
