Abstract
X-ray astronomy began to play a major role in the study of clusters of galaxies ten years ago with the discovery of extended X-ray sources associatd with rich clusters (Gursky et.al. 1971, Kellogg et.al. 1972, and Forman et.al. 1972). Initially, two competing models were proposed to account for this emission. One model relied on inverse compton scattering of the microwave background photons on energetic electrons whose existence was inferred from radio observations of extended synchrotron sources in clusters (Harris and Romanishin 1974). The second model was thermal bremsstrahlung from a hot gas of 100 million degrees (see for example Solinger and Tucker 1973). The gas was presumed primordial, having been left over from the formation of the galaxies and then heated as the cluster collapsed.
