Abstract

We present results from an extensive survey of stellar X-ray emission, using the EINSTEIN Observatory. Over 140 stars have been detected to date, throughout the H-R diagram, thus showing that soft X-ray emission is the norm rather than the exception for stars in general. This finding is strongly at odds with pre-EINSTEIN expectations based on standard acoustic theories of coronal heating. We present typical examples of stellar X-ray detections and provide an overview of the survey data. In combination with recent results from solar X-ray observations, the new EINSTEIN data argue for the general applicability of magnetic field-related coronal heating mechanisms.
