Abstract

Linear-prediction spectral analysis can provide significantly higher resolution in the estimation of frequency-wave-number spectra from two-dimensional data than is possible using the conventional 2-D discrete Fourier transform (DFT). In this paper one of the best of the known methods for estimating 2-D power spectral density, a linear prediction method due to Ulrych and Walker, is compared with the 2-D DFT on data containing sinusoids in noise. The method demonstrates nearly a factor of four resolution improvement in each dimension relative to the 2-D DFT. A second 2-D linear prediction method, based on data extrapolation, is also compared and is shown to provide similar resolution enhancement with the added benefit of providing power and phase estimates for the sinusoids.
