Abstract

The characteristics of underwater sound transmission through the communication channel formed by the sea are determined by the inhomogeneous channel boundaries, the sea surface and the bottom, and by the spatial and temporal distribution of the velocity of sound together with, but to a lesser extent, the particle velocity of the flow fields in the volume of the sea. The volume inhomogeneities of the communication channel, represented by sound velocity and density distributions, are characterized by a high degree of variability. Significant fluctuations in the volume inhomogeneities as a function of depth, range and time occur over a broad variety of temporal and spatial scales.
