Abstract
In a weakly ionised magneto plasma, when Ω ί /ν ί ≤1 and Ω e /ν e ≫1 E × B fields can induce relative drift between electrons and ions. Depending upon the magnitude of relative drift and presence of density gradients, two types of instabilities may be excited in such plasmas, viz. Farley-Buneman instability and the Gradient-drift or Cross-field Instability.
It is now well established that these instabilities play important role in generation of the ionisation irregularities in the ionospheric electrojets. Laboratory experiments related to these instabilities are reviewed in this paper. These experiments do not attempt a direct simulation of the ionospheric situation as no attempts are made to scale the ionosphere parameters.
The results of the laboratory experiments are compared with in-situ and radar observations of the ionospheric irregularities and with theoretical predictions.
