Evolving Nucleotide Binding Surfaces

We present an analysis of the stability and nature of binding of a nucleotide to several known dehydrogenases. Our approach includes calculation of hydrophobic stabilization of the binding motif and its intermolecular interaction with the ligand. We follow the evolutionary changes of the binding motif by calculating the Euclidean deviation of the respective dehydrogenases. We then discuss the possible structural elements involved in the origin of nucleotide recognition by non-coded primordial polypeptides.
