Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 64))

Abstract

A review is given of the present knowledge and understanding of the E and D regions at high latitudes, and comparisons are made with current ideas concerning the formation of these regions at lower latitudes. Processes operating at E-region heights during auroral events and at D-region heights during solar particle and electron precipitation events are considered. In addition, the growth of water cluster ions, H+. (H20)n, during conditions of low mesospheric temperatures in summer is considered in relation to the formation of noctilucent clouds.
