Abstract

Ethical concepts such as justice may also be theological ones. Religion has played a major role in health care throughout the long history of Western society. It has both motivated its adherents to provide health care institutions and contributed to the shaping of these institutions. In some respects, love or benevolence has been the dominant religious motif that has motivated and shaped the institutions of health care, in other respects it has been religious concepts of justice that have performed this role. It therefore seems appropriate to the purposes of this volume to provide a review of the bearing of theological concepts of justice upon health care.
