Semantic Concepts

In evaluating the role of language as a means for the transmission of messages, a means of communication, we encounter a number of terms that from various points of view concern the relations of language and expressions of language to certain entities that are of an extralinguistic character with respect to the language used in any given communication (i.e. with respect to the object language). Whole strings of such terms are customarily quoted. But the first thing to be recalled here is that common parlance does not generally have clear-cut differences between many of the terms, which are often interchangeable, at least in some contexts.
