Before an illustration can be planned in detail, a decision must be made as to the medium or media for which it is intended. The various media discussed in this book (i.e. printed publications, slides, posters, etc.) each have their own requirements and limitations. The best illustrations are those designed for presentation in one medium only, but in most cases it will be necessary to use the same artwork for more than one purpose, for the sake of economy. With careful planning, however, it is often possible to reach a satisfactory compromise. If the same artwork can be used for publication, for slides and for posters, then a difficult ideal has been achieved.
