Abstract
The best point for starting this review is to refer to the volume published four years ago of the equivalent meeting, held in Nairobi in 1976, under the joint sponsorship of ILRAD and IDRC (Henson & Campbell, 1977). That report includes two reviews on the control of diseases of cattle caused by Theileria annulata and T. parva respectively (Pipano, 1977; Cunningham, 1977). In their excellent papers the two authors defined the role of cell culture in vaccination against tropical theileriosis (T. annulata infection) and East Coast fever (E.C.F. - T. parva infection). At that time it was evident that, while a living cell culture vaccine, comprising schizont-infected lymphoid cells attenuated in vitro, was being widely and effectively used against T. annulata infection, the safest and most effective method for immunizing against E.C.F. was by infection and treatment, using living sporozoites of T. parva. The purpose of this review is to examine, in the light of work reported in the last four years, developments in cell culture techniques with particular reference to immunization against these two diseases.
