Abstract
The first paper in the epidemiology session was a summary by Uilenburg of his own researches and the work of others, set against the background of a most comprehensive review of the world litera-ture. It may seem strange to have commenced the epidemiology session with a taxonomic presentation but, of course, taxonomic consensus is a prerequisite for all research activity on any group of organisms: such an agreement has been notably lacking in the Theileria group but we are, we believe, now very close to agreement. It is rather sad for some of us to say good-bye to genera such as Cytauxzoon and Haematoxenus and to species such as Theileria barnetti but there is no room for argument in the face of the new facts that recent research has uncovered.
