Potentials and Restrictions of Breeding for Protein Improvement in Rapeseed

Oil and protein are the main components of rapeseed. So far, breeding programmes for protein improvement have been mainly devoted to cereals. This is well justified, since cereals are dominant in world agriculture, and provide two-thirds of the calculated food protein production (Table 1). Only one-third is contributed by grain legumes, tuber crops, oilseeds, and others; and even soya belongs to this minor group.
