Abstract
Polymeric IgA was isolated from human and rat IgA myeloma sera and labelled with 125 I. When injected intravenously into rats and rabbits these materials were, like native IgA antibodies, rapidly transported from blood to Bile so that up to half the injected dose was recovered in the bile within 5 h.
When the same materials were injected into either sheep or guineapigs, they remained in the vascular compartments and were not transported into the bile to any significant extent.
Thus there seems to be a functional homology between the Immunoglobulin A-secretory component system of some animals but this is far from universal, and the reasons for this odd distribution are not immediately apparent.
